From the Principal

Dear Woodward Families,

I love this time of year when we step out of the usual routine and bring a humanitarian focus and purpose to our students at Woodward through the annual Woodward Values in Action Deep Dive! Our goal is to teach and encourage students to apply the Woodward values of Compassion, Integrity and Connection to current, real-world hardships that impact specific groups of people, both in our community and globally. Woodward is named after Walt & Milly Woodward, two heroic people who stood strong for civil and human rights, so this work is also a meaningful way to continue to honor their legacy.

This year our focus is on REFUGEES in our community and around the world. Why refugees? Historically and currently, refugees are a part of our own community. Learning about refugees provides students a chance to imagine life from another perspective and gain knowledge about the experiences of people who’ve faced great challenges. These lessons help students turn understanding into action — living our values of Connection, Integrity, and Compassion.

What to expect::
  • Four schoolwide Seminar lessons centered around refugees
  • Lessons in math, language arts, science, and electives that focus on a specific hardship refugees face
  • An all-school read-aloud of the book Alone: The Journeys of Three Young Refugees
  • Guest speakers in Social Studies on May 1st
  • An all-school assembly on April 30th featuring Edel Rodriguez, author of WORM, A Cuban American Odyssey
  • A final all-school service project: a sock drive to support Ukrainian refugees in the Seattle area

How  does learning about refugees increase Connection, Integrity and Compassion?  Experiences like this help students build empathy and broaden their understanding of the world around them. By learning about others’ experiences, students are better able to connect, act with integrity, and show compassion in their everyday lives.

I am thankful to Sue Constan for leading this effort every year, all of our teachers for embracing it to make it happen, and our PTO for supporting it financially.  If you have additional questions or would like to volunteer or be involved in this month-long social emotional learning event, please contact 7th grade counselor, Sue Constan at sconstan@bisd303.org

Thank you for sending us your super students!

Woodward Seminar

The last Seminar lesson in March and the first three Seminar lessons in April are part of our Woodward’s Values in Action Deep Dive: A Reflective Values in Action Journey.

On March 30th, students will learn about the Values in Action ‘Deep Dive’ that will take place during the entire month of April and our all school focus on REFUGEES in our community, nation and world. In this lesson, we will also review our Woodward values of Compassion, Connection and Integrity.

The April 13th lesson will learn/review important terms for those who have left their home and are displaced as well as learn about global refugee statistics and why people become refugees. We will end this lesson by watching and discussing a segment/story from Starting Again: Stories of Refugee Youth.

On April 20th we look at refugees in our community and world through the lens of INTEGRITY by exploring the question: How do we show integrity with refugees in our community, nation and world? We also share an example of community advocacy and will introduce our Woodward Values in Action service project See information next week about our sock drive to support Ukrainian Refugees in the Seattle area.

For the April 27th lesson students will view the refugee crisis through the lens of COMPASSION by using their imagination to put themselves in others’ shoes and gaining a deeper understanding of the impact that fleeing from a desperate situation would have on someone’s life.

8th Grade Banquet

Dear 8th grade families,
We are getting excited to celebrate our students at 8th grade banquet, Saturday May 30th! Please read below for requested pictures/memories of your student. Ticket sales coming soon.

PHOTOS NEEDED!
We are collecting photos for the Baby/Childhood Photo Collage and the Memories Slideshow to help make the 8th Grade Banquet more personal. Please see details below for these two projects.

Baby/Childhood Photo Collage
The photo collage will be displayed in the Woodward Commons glass case leading up to the banquet for students to guess who's who! Please submit one baby or childhood photo of your student, no larger than 4x6 and only of your child (no group photo shots). For a hard copy, print your child's first and last name on the back and drop it in the designated box at the Woodward Office. Please note this photo will not be returned. You can also submit a digital copy at the link below. Please make sure to indicate your child's name when asked for "your name". Deadline for submissions is Friday, April 17th.

Memories Slideshow
Every year we run a memories slideshow during the banquet for students to see a playback of their K-8 years. Volunteers need your help collecting hundreds of great moments. Please provide high-resolution images from grades K-8. Images that feature multiple students are preferred. Upload images to the link and make sure to include the names of all students featured in the photos. You can submit more than once if you have many to share!

ABC's for 26-27 Now Open!

It’s ABC time! Please help us plan for next year!

If you know your student will not attend BISD in the fall, please let us know by contacting the school office, or by sending an email to: studentrecords@bisd303.org with your educational plan so that we may adjust our records accordingly.

Our Annual Back to school Check-in process (ABC) is now open and is available by logging in to your Family Access account. Look in the left menu and choose: ABC 26-27 to move through the steps to complete this process ASAP.
It should take about 15 minutes (or less!) to complete the process for each child in your household.
This data collection allows BISD to gather information regarding your students’ plans for the upcoming year. Having an accurate understanding of the number of expected students helps us determine staffing needs, class size and building capacity to better serve our students. In addition to this valuable information, it allows BISD to fulfill its annual notification requirements for public schools in Washington state.

The ABC 26-27 process must be completed for ALL students in the district whether they are brand new to the district or returning. If your student will be enrolled in Running Start, the process must be completed for them as well.

*NOTE: For students with more than one family, ONLY the Primary Family will have access to complete the ABC’s. Guardians of Non-Primary Families will have “read-only” access. If this is a hardship for your family, please contact the school office for guidance, or send an email to studentrecords@bisd303.org. All families have the ability to make changes to their specific demographic information at any time via Family Access>Student Info>Change Requests link (in the top right corner).

TIPS:
  • Use a desktop or laptop computer (if trying to use a mobile device, open up a browser and login to Family Access directly. Or, depending on your device you may be able to choose the “Desktop” version of the mobile app for this purpose).
  • Use the “View Full Screen” buttons when available.
  • Each step has a “Complete Step and Move to….” button. You must click that on each step to mark it as complete.
  • Optional steps: PTSO and Bainbridge Schools Foundation steps are there as informational only. Donations are appreciated, but NOT required!
  • IF you make a change request that needs to be approved by the district you can still Complete the Step and move on to the next step.
  • If you think you have completed the process, but it is not showing as complete, look in the right column menu and look for the step(s) that do not have a check mark next to them. Click the link and you’ll either need to sign and date and/or merely click the “complete step” button….then Submit.
  • The LAST step – takes 2 clicks. “Complete ABC 26-27” followed by “Submit ABC 26-27”. As soon as you “Submit” you will get a notice and email that the process has been completed.
