Announcements

Message from Coach Kate Bryan on 9/4/24:

Woodward families,

We are so happy to have your athletes join our track and field team this year.

We are very impressed with the enthusiasm, sincerity, and athleticism of this year's team. Our 200m early season time trials yesterday showed a ton of times that would have qualified for the 2023 championship!

There have been lots of questions about practice attendance requirements to maintain eligibility to compete in track meets. The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA), our governing body, states: "Schools may not give students special treatment or privileges on a regular basis to enable them to participate in non-school athletic activities. Some examples of special treatment or privileges include reduced practice times, special workouts, late arrivals, early dismissals or missing a practice or contest. Regular is defined as being no more than once per week." (WIAA 17.25.1)

Thus, to ensure that we keep our athletes eligible, athletes must participate regularly in practices/meets AT LEAST 3 out of 4 days each week. This is a 75% attendance requirement.

To be eligible for our first track meet on 19 September at Poulsbo, athletes additionally need to have attended at least 8 practices. Everyone will ride together on the bus to the meet.

Finally, official Woodward track uniform tops will be passed out prior to our first track meet; athletes wear their own dark shorts or school-issued PE shorts. Sidecar Printing is also offering non-uniform, unofficial Woodward track gear for purchase. T-shirts and hoodie sweatshirts will be available for purchase online until noon on 12 September: Sidecar Printing Link

We look forward to seeing all of you at the parent's meeting Thursday, 5 September at 515pm. I'm also happy to continue corresponding with many of you by email, and appreciate the warm welcome!

Best regards,
Coach Kate Bryan

Greetings Woodward families,

I am excited to be the new head track coach at Woodward this fall, and I look forward to coaching your athletes during our quick, but robust track season. My family is new to Bainbridge; we moved to be closer to extended family, for the amazing schools, and for access to outdoor adventures. I previously coached middle school track in California, competed in Division 1 track at Harvard, and held a New England Prep School track record for many years.

We also have two fantastic assistant track coaches this year, and hope to hire at least one more coach. Coach Cole Brundage and Coach Tim Sheehy will coach again this fall, returning experience and expertise from prior years coaching at Woodward.

I attribute my track successes to the coaching, encouragement, and safe and fun environment I was given by my own middle school coaches, and our Woodward track coaching team strives to provide the same environment for your athletes this year.

Our Woodward track coaching team will expect your athletes to work very hard, and also to support and get to know each other. There will be no cell phone use at practice, and attendance will be taken and factored into selection for meet participation.

Our season is short and jam-packed at less than two months long and with seven track meets. This means we literally and figuratively need to hit the ground running, and work on improving technique, speed, and endurance over the course of the entire season and in preparation for high school. We will practice or have track meets Monday through Thursday, weekly, and we ask for full participation and hard work.

Practice will begin on Tuesday, 3 September at the Woodward track. We will practice each Monday through Thursday from 345pm to 515pm, except for the days that we have meets, which will generally start at 330pm and run about three hours.

We expect a very large track roster, and while we have a coaching team, we will need additional parent volunteers to ensure we can allow all interested athletes to participate this season, and have smoothly run practices and meets. Key parent roles will include a home track meet volunteer coordinator, and running workout assistant(s). Thank you! Go Wildcats!

Best regards,

Coach Kate Bryan

Registration – Link to Registration Page

Registration will be capped pending the coaching staff. This is required in order to provide a safe and positive environment for all. In the event there is not enough coaching staff coverage to safely and properly coach all events, field events (shot put, discus and javelin and possibly long jump and high jump) will not be offered. We appreciate your understanding and flexibility.

Home Meets

  • Home meets will be held at the Woodward track. Start times for all meets will be held as close to 3:30 as possible. Start times are different at each school due to different bell schedules and transportation issues. In general, track meets take about 3 hours to complete if everything goes well. About 30 volunteers are needed for each home meet to run events. We greatly appreciate your support!
  • Additionally, a volunteer coordinator is needed.
  • All participants need to stay to the end of the meet to cheer and help clean up
  • Check in with a coach before leaving

Away Meets

  • Bring food & water – no glass containers or nuts please
  • Appropriate clothing – Sweatshirts and pants, running shoes. Rain gear OR sunscreen.
  • Must ride the bus home with the team unless the coach has a note or parents are at the meet
  • Check in with a coach before leaving
  • Pick up from WMS will be in the back (bus) parking lot – promptness is appreciated. Coaches will have athletes call with an approximate time.
