FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Woodward Families,

We are looking forward to an event-filled spring for students as we have an upcoming band concert, Career Exploration for 7th and 8th graders, and our annual deep dive into our Woodward values, this year focusing on refugees.  All of these are driven by our staff as a way to encourage students to think beyond the middle school walls and observe what is happening in our own community, the nation and the world.  More to come on these events!

I wanted to take this opportunity to focus on technology and our students.  As you know, technology is quickly changing and is becoming easier and easier for students to manipulate.  Since we have a no-phones-at-school policy, we expect students to keep their phones and ear buds inside their backpacks the entire school day.  However, we still feel the repercussions of social media.  Students are crushed when they see or hear that something has been posted about themselves or their friends.  Something small can get big quickly.  Also, with the daily advancements and money to be made in getting students on apps, our students are becoming increasingly vulnerable.  If your child has a cell phone or is around others with a device that is connected to the internet, please be aware of these potential issues:

  • Your student’s location may be tracked by people you don’t know.

  • Your student may have followers you don’t know.

  • Your student may be creating profiles using their friends’ devices and then checking them when possible.

  • Your student may be creating fake profiles of other students and sharing them.

  • Your student may not be honest about their device activity because they are afraid of losing access.

  • Algorithms are designed to increase traffic to the highest paying apps and sites regardless of age of user.

  • Algorithms are designed to addict humans and make it difficult to focus on other things.

  • Young people are tech savvy and are able to bypass restrictions put on devices.

It’s understandable that students want devices, but we do need to consider what we are handing them, especially at this age.  We know middle school students are dealing with many emotions.  Making good decisions when under even a small amount of emotional stress is very difficult as their brains are not yet fully developed.  As the adults in their lives, we can help by limiting their exposure to devices.  Not everyone has a cell phone at this age.  Not everyone is allowed to have their cell phone or device 24/7.  It is completely normal to monitor devices and limit when they are allowed to use them.

As adults, we know how the internet works to funnel us into certain storylines, opinions and advertisements.  It’s important we consider what students are being exposed to on a regular basis.  Even if your student doesn’t have a device, they are still exposed second hand.  These are good opportunities to talk about the business and real purpose associated with the internet and cell phones with your students.

Please reach out if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Jeannie Donoghue

8TH GRADE BANQUET

8th Grade Banquet is fast approaching!  It’s island tradition to send our students up to BHS with a grand celebration.  8th grade banquet is a fun, festive party with a top secret theme, dinner, music, and entertainment.  Please read below for the action item needed by all 8th grade families regarding photos for the event!

Date:  Saturday, June 1, 2024
Time:  6:00 - 9:30 pm
Place:  Woodward Middle School
For:  Currently Enrolled Woodward 8th Graders!

Baby Photo Mural and the Memories Slideshow
We need photos for two projects to make the banquet personal for our children.  There will be a baby photo montage as well as a slideshow featuring hundreds of memories.  We hope to see 100% of the students represented in both!  To make it easier on families, we are collecting digital photos with a single online form.  Details for each photo project is below.  Thank you for your submissions!

Baby/Childhood Photo Needed for Photo Collage
We are collecting a baby/childhood photo of each 8th grader to be displayed in the Woodward Commons glass case leading up to the 8th Grade Banquet.  It's fun for students and staff to try to guess who's who in our version of #throwbackthursday for 8th graders!  We want to make this easy for you!  Hard copy or digital - we're set up to take both!  Please either drop off a baby/childhood photo of your son or daughter in the designated box at the Woodward Office (include name on the back) OR submit a photo using the Google Form.  Please note these important guidelines when selecting a photo for this collage:

  • One photo per student
  • Photo should be no larger than "4x 6"
  • Please print your child's first and last name on the back of your hard-copy photo OR indicate child’s name on the form if submitting a digital copy
  • Photocopies or originals are gladly accepted, but please note that photos will not be returned
  • Please make sure the submitted photo is just of your child (no group photo shots)
  • Deadline for submissions is Friday, March 22nd

Candid and Group Photos for the Memories Slideshow
Every year, we run a memories slideshow during the 8th Grade Banquet; it's fun for students to see a playback of their K-8 years together!  Volunteers need your help to collect hundreds of great moments to build out this fun and emotional montage for the banquet.  Please provide high-resolution (clear) images and include the full name of the students included in the pictures.  Photos should be from grades K-8 and images that feature multiple students are preferred.  The banquet team will use as many photos as we can, filtering for appropriate content and representation of all students.  Note that the photos will not be used for any other purpose.  It's easy to upload images with our Google Form and you can submit more than once if you have lots of pictures to share.  If you have any questions or issues please contact our slideshow lead, Samantha Barth, at ssspeich@yahoo.com or (206) 604-5122.

Career Exploration at Woodward Middle School
Utilizing our Monday Seminar time, Woodward students will dive into career exploration utilizing a program called Career Planner. At the beginning of the month, 7th grade students will take a Preference Survey and 8th grade students will take an Interest Survey.  Results of these surveys will link students to careers that align with their preferences and interests.  For the second career lesson, students will dig deeper into the careers that interest them by exploring duties, training, helpful high school courses and wages of those careers.  On March 21st, we will host a career exploration day:  INSPIRE (for 8th graders) and EXPLORE (for 7th graders).  More information below.

EXPLORE

Explore for 7th Grade Students

On Thursday March 21st, 7th grade students will participate in the half day event called EXPLORE.  Explore is focused on exposing students to future careers while also bringing a bit of real work simulation on budgeting.  After completing a career exploration activity in their Seminar class, students will utilize their top career interests to complete a reality simulation to make a month's salary last as they pay for the various expenses in life.  Also, students will rotate through career exposure sessions including:  STEM Like Me (STEM professionals from all different industries share their experience and a hands on activity), Western Washington Cyber Range (share exciting opportunities within the world of cyber security), Kitsap Builders Association, and the variety of careers within the Food Industry.

INSPIRE

Inspire for 8th Grade Students

On Thursday, March 21st, 8th grade students will participate in our annual Inspire event.  This day started over 15 years ago with the intent of giving students a chance to hear adults speak about their experiences, their careers and their passions.  The vision of this day is to motivate and inspire our students to think about their own potential and how they could construct meaningful, fun, and interesting paths in their lives.  Each year, we strive to bring in a variety of speakers to offer students the opportunity to listen to and learn from people in our community.

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING

Social and Emotional Learning - March Seminar

Career Exploration is the main topic for Seminar in March.  In addition, 7th grade students will have a lesson on Navigating Friend Groups and 8th grade students will have a lesson on Understanding Emotions and the Mindfulness Strategy of AWE.  The final lesson of the month is the first of a four part series titled Woodward's Values In Action "Deep Dive" - A Reflective Values in Action Journey.  On March 25th, students will review our WMS values of Connection, Integrity and Compassion in preparation for utilizing these values as we explore Refugees in our Community which is the focus of this year’s Values In Action Deep Dive.  Please see additional information in the April newsletter for a full description of this all-school Values in Action project.

MUSIC FOR ALL GENERATIONS

FACSE PROJECT

Family and Consumer Sciences Education - Apron Project

8th grade FACSE students began this semester learning how to use sewing machines.  Threading the machines was a challenge at first, but it became easier with practice.  For the final sewing project, students designed and produced their very own apron to be used for the rest of the semester in Culinary Arts.   The aprons are reversible and have ties and pockets.  Students remarked on how satisfying it was to complete this project!  Below are a few pictures from the 2nd period 8th grade class.
