From the Principal

Dear Woodward Families,
This month at Woodward, we’re looking ahead and focusing on the future! High school counselors are on campus this week to meet with our 8th graders and guide them through course registration. All 8th grade registration will be completed by 9:00 a.m. on March 9th. Our current 7th graders are also preparing for next year—students are working with their counselor, Sue Constan, and will have their registration finalized by Friday, March 6th.

Career Exploration is also a big highlight this month. On March 26th, all WMS students will participate in a morning dedicated to exploring careers and life after school.

INSPIRE is our 8th grade program, where professionals from our community and beyond share their career journeys and the paths that led them there. Students will have the opportunity to hear from four different speakers throughout the morning, gaining insight and inspiration for their own futures.

EXPLORE is designed for our 7th graders. Students will participate in Welcome to Your Future, an interactive budget-planning simulation based on various career choices. In addition, professionals from around Kitsap County will represent a wide range of careers. This hands-on experience allows students to engage in simulations and activities connected to different fields of work.

We are currently in need of 12 parent volunteers for EXPLORE. It’s a fun and meaningful way to see our students in action and support this important experience. I encourage you to consider signing up and being part of the day! Sign-up here to help.

Have a wonderful week and thank you for sending us your students!

Girls Exploring Math & Science

Girls in grades 5-8 who are interested in math and science can check out this free event on Saturday, March 21 at the Olympic College - Bremerton campus.

There is also a concurrent parent/guardian workshop: Strength Based Parenting and Future Planning
This 3-hour interactive workshop helps parents and caregivers feel confident supporting their youth’s future planning — whether that path includes college, trades, workforce, or other post-secondary options. Participants will complete a Strength-Based Parenting assessment (book included), starting with their own strengths, then learn how to recognize and grow their child’s strengths to build hope and resilience. Together, we’ll explore how to plan with your child instead of for them, approaching next steps as a human journey shaped by identity, curiosity, and growth. You’ll leave with practical tools to encourage motivation, direction, and confidence at home.

Spartan Football - Spring Training

Work directly with the BHS Football staff to build speed and power to elevate your game and prep for your future as a Spartan!

More information and registration can be found on the WMS website. All forms, including an updated physical, need to be completed in order to participate.

Raindrop Capture - Shallow Depth of Field Exercise

Using our point and shoot cameras students were able to force a shallow depth of field by getting closer to our subject. Taking a close-up photo of a raindrop in focus, forces shallow depth of field, creating a blurred background. This means that our shutter is wide open to about an aperture setting of f4

Math Counts Competition

On February 28, 2026, six eighth graders and one seventh grader from Woodward Middle School participated in the Mathcounts Competition. This math competition took place at Sylvester Middle School in Seattle, lasting from around 9 in the morning to 1 in the afternoon. Several other schools participated as well, most notably Pine Lake Middle School, who won first place for both the individual and team scores, and Sylvester Middle School themselves, who won third place.

There were four separate contests in the competition: the sprint round, the target round, the team round, and the countdown round. The sprint round and target round were both individual, the former consisting of 30 questions in 40 minutes. The target round was eight questions, but split into four sections each with two questions every six minutes, with one minute breaks in between each section. The team round consisted of 10 questions in 2- minutes, where participants listed in the team (not all participants of the competition were listed as team members) were able to work together to solve them. Each of these three rounds determined if the participants would be eligible for the state competition later in the month. Those eligible were the top ten individual scores and the top three teams. The top ten individual scores were also in the countdown round, the only round that did not affect the participant’s official scores. The countdown round was a lightning-round student vs. student with buzzers, where the top ten competed against each other one at a time to solve the same problem.

There were also fifteen minute breaks between each of the first three rounds, and an hour lunch between the team and countdown rounds. They provided pizza, drinks, and many snacks as well. Unfortunately, no students from Woodward made it into state, but it was a very enjoyable experience for all of the students.

Volunteers Needed - Thursday March 26

Woodward Middle School will host “Welcome to Your Future,” a budgeting exercise based on career choices, for 7th graders, on Thursday, March 26

We are looking for 12 parent volunteers for the morning. Volunteers will meet at 8:30am on the north side of the school building (where the school buses pick up), for a training session, and then will work with students from 9-1 during the budgeting simulation. Please consider volunteering, and make sure you have a current volunteer application on file with the school district. The form can be found here, if needed.

Please sign-up for a spot if you are able to help!

8th Grade Banquet

Eighth Grade Banquet planning is well underway and our Top-Secret theme is generating lots of excitement among our volunteer parents. If you haven’t signed up yet, but still want to be part of the fun, there’s still time to join our team!

Please click this link to see the specific roles that we would like to fill this Spring.

Over 100 volunteers work for a year to transform the school. If you don’t have the time, but still want to participate, please consider sponsoring a zone, a food item, a student ticket or a prize, or make a general contribution towards keeping costs manageable for our community.

If you are a 7th Grade parent and interested in taking on a leadership role for next year's banquet and would like to start learning the ropes, please reach out to our event chairs Laura and Jen at woodward.banquet@bainbridgeptos.org to discuss.

Thank you to our many volunteers and contributors!
