Mrs. Donoghue

From the Principal

Dear Woodward Families,
Student Led Conferences are next week! January 21, 22 & 23 are non-school days dedicated to our Student Led Conferences (SLC).

Scheduling:
Please sit down with your student and select a time ASAP.  The spreadsheet is available in your student’s 4th period Seminar Google Classroom; your student needs to register with your guidance as soon as possible.

It’s important to focus on the purpose of SLC, which is very different from the very familiar K-6 Parent Teacher Conferences that you have been accustomed to over the years.  In the traditional teacher-led conferences, the purpose is for teachers to take the lead  to share student progress, both academically and behaviorally.  In the SLC, students take the lead role in sharing their learning and progress in each of their classes - we want them talking to you about what and how they are doing in school.  This is the beginning of learning to take responsibility for their success in school and is part of the Common Core State Standards.

Student Led Conferences help develop student accountability, self-reflection and goal setting while fostering a sense of ownership in their education.  These conferences provide a formal time and space for students to engage in purposeful discussion with their family centered around their academic growth.

During the Student Led Conference, your student will share with you their portfolio which is a collection of representative work and self-reflective evaluations from all First Semester subject areas. Students are working with their 4th period teachers who are providing guidance in organizing, preparing and practicing their portfolio presentations.

We have close to 100% participation in Student Led Conferences and are looking forward to continuing this valuable tradition again with you!

We look forward to seeing you at Woodward during the conference days.  Please let us know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
Jeannie Donoghue

New Year = New Learning: Every Day Counts

As we begin the new year, we know that getting to school isn’t always easy for every 7th and 8th grader. Changes in routines, academic pressure, social challenges, or anxiety can make attendance feel overwhelming at times—and many families experience this.

When students are able to attend school regularly, it helps them stay connected to caring adults and peers, keep up with coursework, and build confidence and routines that support a smoother transition to high school. Even small steps toward consistent attendance can help reduce stress from missed work over time.

Regular attendance also helps school staff recognize early when a student may need extra support, so families and schools can work together to address concerns before they grow. If your child is having a hard time getting to school, please reach out. You’re not alone, and we’re here to partner with you in finding supportive and manageable solutions.

Together, let’s make this a year of growth, reassurance, and progress for our students.

The Young People’s March for Peace and Kindness, an opportunity to practice service in the spirit of MLK and Day will happen this year on Monday, January 19th. Children of all ages, their families, and community members, are invited to gather for letter writing between 10:30-11:15 at the Bainbridge Island Library. At 11:15, we will march together to the Winslow post office to mail our letters. Bring signs, banners, friends, and your own stamp. Addresses and inspiration provided. Dress appropriately for the weather. We will joyfully be walking rain or shine!

This event is held with thanks to Bainbridge Island School District, Kitsap Regional Library, the BISD Multicultural Advisory Council and with support from our sponsor, Charter Real Estate.

Bainbridge Wrestling

The middle and intermediate school Bainbridge Wrestling program (Affiliated with USA wrestling) is a free after school program held at the Bainbridge High School wrestling room for 5th through 8th grade students.

We are excited to use the great sport of wrestling as a way to build and grow more athletic and tougher athletes on Bainbridge Island. Wrestling is a fun and competitive sport that provides opportunities for growth of the mind and the body. Anyone interested should be committed to at least 2 practices a week for the entirety of the season.

To sign up, please contact Dan Pippinger (danpippinger@gmail.com) or pick-up a form in the WMS Office.
