Jeannie Donoghue

From the Principal

Dear Woodward Families,
We’re having a fantastic time celebrating ASB Spirit Week here at WMS! It's been such a joy to see our students and staff showing their creativity and school spirit through fun, themed outfits. Tomorrow’s theme is Winter or Summer Wear. Looking ahead to Friday—Halloween! Students are welcome to wear costumes to school, but we do ask that everyone follow these guidelines:
  • No fake weapons, props, blood, or gore
  • No face paint, masks, or face coverings
  • No inflatables or costumes that make it difficult to sit or move through hallways
  • Costumes that could be offensive or perpetuate a stereotype of someone's culture, gender, heritage or religion are not allowed

Veterans Day Assembly
We are looking forward to honoring our nation’s veterans at the Woodward Veterans Day Assembly on November 10 at 9:45 a.m. We would be deeply honored to welcome parents and family members who have served in the armed forces to join us as guests for this special event. If you or a family member are able to attend, please RSVP to Kristin Gellert at (206) 780-4501 or kgellert@bisd303.org so we can reserve a seat for you. Feel free to reach out with any questions.

This year’s assembly will feature a keynote speech from Woodward’s own Veteran, Tim Harris, as well as performances by our Woodward Band and Choir and a presentation by our student Boy Scout Color Guard.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful students with us each day—they make Woodward a truly special place to learn and grow!

Warm regards,
Jeannie Donoghue

Social and Emotional Learning at Woodward Middle School

Seminar Lessons for the month of October

Each Monday during 4th period your student participates in Woodward Seminar, a social emotional learning (SEL) platform designed by a dedicated group of Woodward teachers. We use the WMS newsletter to highlight the Seminar lesson themes that will be taking place for the upcoming month.

At the beginning of the month, we highlighted lessons for October’s National Bullying Prevention Month.
On October 6th, the 7th grade lesson discussed the various roles in a bullying situation. The lesson included two short videos and five scenarios for students to discuss. In 8th grade, students participated in a self-awareness exercise where they reflect on the roles they have played and/or witnessed in a bullying situation.
In the October 14th lesson, students discussed email etiquette and also participated in a Youth Needs Screener.
On October 20th, 7th grade explored the power of words, focusing on the meaning of Microaggressions & Dehumanization. Our 8th grade students discussed how our small biases can grow into more extreme behaviors including dehumanization of groups of people.
On October 27th, students participated in goal setting for the school year.

Community Swing Dance Nov. 8th at BHS Commons

The Bainbridge Band Boosters invites the community to the 11th Annual Community Swing Dance on Friday, November 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the Bainbridge High School Commons. This all-ages, family-friendly event will feature three hours of swing dancing to live Big Band Jazz music performed by the award-winning Bainbridge High School Jazz Collective.

The evening also includes free swing dance lessons and a silent auction to benefit BISD Bands at Bainbridge High School, Woodward Middle School, and Sakai Intermediate School.

Tickets are $50 for adults and $20 for students with a school ID. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.BainbridgeJazz.org

Supplemental EP&O Levy

Want to understand what BISD’s Supplemental Educational Programs & Operations (EP&O) Levy means for our schools and community? Visit our Levy Information Webpage to get all the details.

Every day in BISD, students are supported by strong academics, creative opportunities, and staff who care for their whole well-being. This levy helps bridge the gap between what the state funds and what it actually costs to provide the education our community values.

The proposed rate is $0.08 per $1,000 of assessed value in 2026$0.11 in 2027, and $0.13 in 2028—and even with this addition, overall school taxes will decrease as older bond taxes expire.

Take the BISD Community Survey

Your input matters! BISD is planning for the future, and we invite families to share their perspectives in our short Community Survey. The feedback we gather will help guide district priorities and goals for the next five years.

Survey closes Friday, October 31 at 5 p.m.

Inspired Art

After studying photographer Inge Morath and illustrator Saul Steinberg and their collaborative work Masquerade, students brought the concept to life by creating and photographing their own imaginative “bag heads.” Through this playful project, students explored identity, creativity, and self-expression — capturing portraits that are both whimsical and thought-provoking.

Builders' Club Food Drive

Builders' Club is hosting a food fundraiser for Helpline house from November 3 to November 19.

Around the holidays, Helpline House helps more people than they usually do, so they need more food. Helpline House needs food like boxed macaroni and cheese, sugar, pasta, spices, boxed milk (that can be unrefrigerated), flour, any canned items (ex: canned soups, canned corn, canned broth, canned meats, and more), aluminum foil, plastic wrap, paper plates, paper napkins, and more.

To help them out, we are hosting a competition! Students will need to drop these items off at their fourth period classroom, and the top three classrooms with the most food raised win donuts. If you could help out, it would be greatly appreciated– after all, a little help from everyone is a lot of help for a person in need.
Thanks,
Builder’s Club — Ananya, 8th Grade

Fallapalooza

On October 24th, students stayed after school to hang out and enjoy this year’s Fallpalooza, a fun and chill way to wrap up the week. The event brought everyone together for an evening full of games and snacks. There was a limbo competition that got everyone cheering, and karaoke for those brave enough to take the mic and show off their singing skills.

Snacks were a big hit—tables were lined with candy, cookies, and plenty of other treats to keep everyone full throughout the couple of hours. Outside, there were also Cotton candy hot dogs and snow cones! In the gym, friends raced through bouncy castles, played basketball, and joined in on a variety of games. In the commons, students got face tattoos and spent time chatting, listening to music, and just hanging around

Overall, Fallpalooza provided a great opportunity for students to have fun, snacks, and spend time with friends before returning to the school week on Monday. It was the perfect mix of excitement and relaxation to celebrate October. — Ariana, 8th Grade
