FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Woodward Families,

This is a great time to say thank you to all our parent volunteers!!  Woodward has had an active and productive PTO board this year and I thank each of them for their dedication to our students and staff!  Please consider joining the Woodward PTO Board for next year - we need you!  More information follows in our PTO section.  We also had another fantastic 8th Grade Banquet thanks to the dozens of volunteers and leaders!  What a great way to end the year for our 8th graders!

As you know, we are saying goodbye to Carol Mendoza who has taken a principalship job in Bremerton.  We want to thank her for all her work at WMS!  We are excited to welcome Danielle Warman as our new Associate Principal.  Mrs. Warman comes with many years experience at middle schools including teacher, associate principal and most recently, Kingston Middle School Principal.  We are looking forward to her expertise with 7th and 8th grade students!

I would also like to thank all of our WMS staff for the work they do every day.  Each staff member has an impact on students whether they are teaching, serving  meals, listening to concerns, helping solve problems or greeting them as they enter school.  Woodward staff are conscientious and caring, always finding ways to connect positively with students.  I see this every minute of every day and I’m very grateful to work with such a talented group of people.

I sincerely hope your summer will be filled with joy and lots of fun times whether you stay close to home and enjoy our beautiful weather and many activities on Bainbridge, or head out for off-island adventures.  I have truly enjoyed working with your students and have seen such great growth in both 7th and 8th graders.  I look forward to next year as we welcome the incoming class of 2030 and prepare the class of 2029 for high school.

Thank you for sending us your students!!

PTO NEWS

Dear Woodward Families,

We’re in the home stretch!  7th Grade Parents, we need your help filling in positions for next year’s PTO.  These are the positions that have been filled:  Treasurer, Secretary, 8th Grade Banquet Chairs, Spirit Wear Coordinator and Sustainability Chair.  We still have some key positions that need to be filled.  Please take a look at our OPEN 2024-2025 PTO POSITIONS to see what is still open.  The commitment is one year (two years for Treasurer), open to all Woodward parents and guardians, and no prior experience is required.  Our last monthly meeting for this school year is scheduled for this Friday, June 7th via Zoom starting at 9:30 am.  We cordially invite all new PTO members and interested parents to this meeting.  Meeting Link.

Field Day, June 18:  Planning is underway for an epic field day this year.  Our goal is to give students a chance to celebrate school coming to an end, show some class pride, and spend the day being active.  We need 24 volunteers who have been cleared by BISD to help with this fun and memorable event.  Check out SignUpGenius for details.

Finally, I want to thank everyone who contributed to the successful Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week last month.  Wow!  From the lunches to the goodies and the gifts, you all went above and beyond.  It’s been an honor to serve this amazing Woodward community.

Best,

Stephanie Page

COUNSELING CORNER

It's time to do the ABCs for all students returning to BISD for 2024-2025
Our Annual Back-to-school Check-in (ABC) process lets us know that your student(s) are returning to our schools for 2024-2025 and allows parents/guardians to review annual information.  The ABCs must be completed for all students attending BISD schools in 2024-2025 — this includes both new and returning students.   Access the ABCs by logging into your Family Access account.  It should take about 15 minutes (or less) to complete for each student.  Please note that class placement/class schedules will not be released in August until the ABCs are completed.

WMS Tours for Sakai 6th Graders on June 13th and 14th

The transition students experience from 6th grade to 7th grade is filled with unknowns that can feel exciting and overwhelming at the same time.  These tours are a part of our intentional work to acclimate new seventh graders to get them positively connected to Woodward before they break for summer.  Students (divided into groups) will walk from Sakai to Woodward and spend the last hour of the school day touring Woodward with our Leadership students.  We look forward to welcoming our rising 7th graders on June 13th and 14th!

Refusal Skills Lesson
During health class in June, WMS counselors are teaching a lesson called Learning Refusal Skills - strategies to handle peer pressure and learn to say ‘no”.  Included in this lesson are discussing difficult situations that 7th/8th graders find themselves in where they want to say ‘no’ (but it’s hard).  We also discuss steps to take to get out of a situation that makes them feel uncomfortable, crosses a boundary or instinctually doesn’t feel right.

Summer Extracurricular Activities
As the end of the school year approaches, students and educators are looking forward to time off from the routine of school.  There are many opportunities on our island and neighboring communities that provide students an avenue to pursue interests and develop skills outside of the school building through camps, classes, community activities and volunteering.  If you would like to sign your student up for a camp or activity this summer and need scholarship assistance, please contact Woodward School Counselors, Patti Beer/ 206-780-4507 (8th grade) or Sue Constan/ 206-780-4506 (7th grade).  We can guide you to possible scholarship opportunities.

Below is a short list of local camps, summer classes, activities and volunteer opportunities on our island and neighboring communities:

Have a relaxing and fun-filled summer,
Patti and Sue

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING

This Month in Seminar

On June 3rd, 7th and 8th grade students will review the SMART goals that they made earlier in the year and reflect on the progress and successes as well as the challenges and determine how they might solve these challenges as they move into the next school year.  For the June 10th lesson, both grades will review their Power of Words lessons that took place earlier in the year and discuss yearbook signing etiquette.  For the final Seminar lesson on June 17th, students will reflect on Seminar lessons from the school year and participate in a short Seminar survey.

IMPORTANT YEAR-END SCHOOL NEWS

Library Books Due
Textbooks and Library materials are due by June 10th.  Please do not return materials to classrooms - the library is where it's at!   All lost materials will incur a fine if not returned, but we would really like the materials back, so please take the time to find them.  There is also a possibility of book replacement instead of a fine.  Please email Mr. Spitz,
jspitz@bisd303.org, with questions and concerns before June 10th.

Student Chromebooks
WMS will NOT be collecting student Chromebooks at the end of the year.  Since students will continue using their assigned Chromebooks next fall, whether they remain at WMS or advance to EHHS or BHS, we ask that students keep their devices over the summer.  If you are leaving the district, please have your student drop off their Chromebook, power cord, and bag at the WMS library on June 18th or June 20th (Last Day of School).  If you have any questions or concerns about this process or your student's Chromebook, please contact the BISD Technology department at (206) 780-1668.

Schedule for the Last Day of School
The last day of school is June 20th and students will follow the half-day dismissal schedule.  Buses will provide service to and from school.  Breakfast will be available on June 20th but lunch will not be served.  Woodward students are dismissed at 12:00 PM.  Here is the Woodward Schedule for June 20th, Half-Day Schedule for June 20th.

Lost and Found Items
Our lost and found is the the student Commons.  Please have your student check for clothing, books, water bottles and lunch boxes before the end of the year.  After June 20th, items will be donated to Charity.

YEARBOOK DISTRIBUTION UPDATE

Yearbook Distribution is Delayed

We've learned some news about our yearbooks and want to give you the update.  Our plan was to distribute yearbooks on Monday, June 17th.  Although the WMS yearbook staff met all required deadlines, unfortunately, our printing company informed us that there will be a delay in delivery.  Balfour has taken full responsibility for the issue and their team is working diligently to deliver our yearbooks as soon as possible.

Due to this delay, Balfour has offered to send books, free of charge, to each student's preferred address this summer.  Students will also receive autographed pages for their friends to sign before the end of school.  These pages have a self-adhesive strip that can be attached to their yearbook when they receive it.  Thank you for your patience and understanding.

FROM THE HEALTH ROOM

From the Health Room

The end of the school year is just about here!  Thank you to all of those who have completed medication permission forms and have supplied us with medications for your students this year.  Please pick up any remaining medication on, or immediately following the last day of school.  Unless prior arrangements have been made, all medication that is not picked up will be disposed of on Friday, June 21, 2024.

Medication for next year will require new physician/parent permission forms at the beginning of the 2024-25 School year.  These forms are required to be renewed on an annual basis.  Medication Permission Forms are available in the school office and on our district website:  Medication at School.

Rising 7th Graders!  Just a reminder, 7th Grade Tdap booster is a requirement that must be completed prior to the start of 7th grade.  Please have this completed before the first day of school.

Thank you for your continued support and for sharing your wonderful students with us this past year.  It has been a joy getting to know them and to see them grow in so many ways.  Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.  Our WMS Health Room Office is 206-780-4511.

Warm Wishes,
Theresa Raleigh, RN
