FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Woodward Families,

SO many amazing things are happening at Woodward!  We just finished our Refugee Deep Dive where we completed an all-school read of the book, ALONE The Journeys of Three Young Refugees, by Paul Tom & Melanie Baillairge, invited guest speakers who are refugees to talk to students about their experiences and had activities in all classes around this topic.  It was an eye-opening experience for many of our students.  I also had the opportunity to participate in 7th grade science classes where guest speaker Brian McGing, from UW Medical Center,  brought in preserved human organ specimens encompassing both healthy and unhealthy examples and shared his knowledge of human anatomy and physiology with all our 7th graders.  It was a truly extraordinary experience!  Thank you Mr. McGing!

Next week we start the Washington State Assessments:  Smarter Balanced (SBA) in Language Arts and Math, and Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science for 8th graders.  We appreciate your support in helping students come to school on time, well-rested and with fully charged Chromebooks.  Students may use their own headphones as long as they are wired to plug into their Chromebooks as wireless are not allowed and will not work.  Following are the dates we will be testing; the detailed testing schedule is here:

May 7 & 8:  SBA Language Arts

May 16 & 17:  SBA Math

May 23 & 24:  WCAS Science (8th grade only)

Please reach out if you have any questions!  Thank you for sending us your wonderful students!

Sincerely,

Jeannie Donoghue

COUNSELING CORNER

It's time to do the ABCs for all students returning to BISD for the 2024-25 school year!

Our Annual Back-to-school Check-in (ABC) process lets us know that your student(s) are returning to our schools for 2024-25 and allows parents/guardians to review annual information.  The ABCs must be completed for all students attending BISD schools in 2024-25 — this includes both new and returning students.   Access the ABCs by logging into your Family Access account.  It should take about 15 minutes (or less) to complete for each student.  Please note that class placement/class schedules will not be released in August until the ABCs are completed.

Woodward Deep Dive Wrap Up

On April 25th, we wrapped up our April Deep Dive where we spent the month learning about refugees in our community through the lens of Connection, Integrity and Compassion.  During this month, your students participated in a variety of lessons and discussions.  One of the final events was a guest speaker panel discussion that took place in your students' social studies class.  A special thank you to Woodward PTO for their support of this event as well as our guest speakers from our community who shared their stories with us.

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING

This Month in Seminar

Seminar is WMS’s weekly social emotional learning platform that takes place on Mondays during 4th period.  Following is what will take place in Seminar lessons for the month of May.  On Monday, May 6th, students will participate in practice tests to prepare for SBA Testing.  On May 13th and 20th, the focus of these lessons will be Self-Esteem - what is self esteem, factors that impact self-esteem and steps you can take to improve it.

ART NEWS FROM WMS

Art News from Woodward Middle School

Every other year, middle schools on the island are invited to show student artwork at Bainbridge Arts and Crafts (BAC) in Winslow.  This year's opening reception is May 3, 2024 from 4:30 until 6pm, that's TONIGHT!  The show will run until May 19th.  Artwork from Woodward, Sakai, Odyssey as well as other independent middle schools on the island will be displayed.

Woodward students received a notice this week if their art will be showcased at BAC.  The short notice is because it depends on the space and participation from the other schools how much art we can put up.  My goal is to get as much Woodward art on the walls as possible.

Stop by Bainbridge Arts and Crafts anytime to support our students and the arts.

Thank you,

Melissa Dutton M.A. Ed
Art Specialist, Woodward Middle School

RIDWELL PLASTIC FILM CAMPAIGN

To celebrate earth day, the FCCLA Club (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) is partnering with Ridwell to collect and recycle plastic film.

  • 4th period homerooms will collect plastic film in a designated box provided by FCCLA Club.
  • The top three homerooms to collect plastic film will receive dozens of cookies baked by the FCCLA club on Friday, May 17th.
  • This Ridwell Flyer provides information to help you identify plastic film.
